This I Believe- The Potential of Humanity though the Power of the Unknown

Disclaimer: This is my belief. This is my opinion. In this piece I will probably offend some people in some way. So please continue reading with an open mind.

Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!
-Anne Frank

I believe in the potential of humanity, and that the key to unlocking that potential is the unknown.
Let me tackle this in parts. First, what intrigues us? Why is the unknown so interesting? The answer is limitless. We are so intrigues by the unknown by the simple fact that we don’t know what is there. We have no idea how much knowledge the unknown has. We want answers to our questions and that motivates us to unlock our potential. The mystery of the unknown and the universe is vast. Yet we as a race continue to uncover it piece by piece. We are a race that seeks knowledge of our world and how it functions. In the past couple of years we have seen a great growth in medical and scientific technology that was past thought impossible. We see innovation every day and we step one step closer to uncovering the unknown. We have many questions on our minds that can only be answered by our labor.

We are all born with something in common. We are all born with unlimited potential. We have the means of transcending previous thoughts and ideas in doing so move to a new plane of thinking. We have the potential to step into the fog known as the unknown and emerging holding all the answers. We have potential to unlock these answers and create technologies that would change the world. Yet we also have the potential to destroy it. We are a weird species in that we each have the potential to solve our problems yet we keep using our inventions to create more.

In the past there have been many humans that have commanded others to kill for them. They created these weapons of mass destruction wait for the chance to use it on their enemies.

My potential is more than can be expressed within the bounds of my race or ethnic identity.
-Aruthur Ashe

We separate ourselves based on ethnic ties or beliefs. We limit our minds by not accepting others ideas. We limit our potential but closing off our brain. We wage wars on each other for reasons we don’t even remember. We use our ideas to create weapon of destruction. Let it be concentration camps or stem cell research all these are creations from human potential. Yet we use these inventions and stunt our own growth as a race by making these invisible boundaries.

I believe that if we are to unlock own true potential we must strive to put aside our differences. We must let our curiosity get the better of us and explore the vast expanse known as the unknown.

Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.
-Wilma Rudolph

Exam- Part 3

The biggest “Aha” moment for me in creative writing class was when Hasem from the play Othello came to our school and explained a lot about Shakespeare. HE explained how Shakespeare wrote and how the punctuation in his writing was different that how we wrote today. Also during the start of the semester we had river visits that really got some nice excerpts from me. I found that if you write in a place of tranquility it could help you almost reach new level of writing. I felt as I wrote there that I was writing about something that really mattered to me. As a reader I accomplished a good bit this first couple of months. A total of 7 books unique books and a re-read of another 6 books. As for what I plan to read next it contains the entire collection of “The Lord Of The Rings” since I have heard much about them but still have yet to read them in their entirety. I also plan to read “Game Of Thrones” before I watch the critically acclaimed show. I plan to start reading the “Ranger’s Apprentice” again since I stopped half way through book 2 and never got back into it. As for my writing I have started a series I call “A Step Into Virtual Reality” where I explore new virtually reality machine that could possibly revolutionize the future of entertainment. I also wrote a nice short story and other miscellaneous poems and posts. As for what I plan to write next is a bit up in the air. I don’t really know for sure what I am going to write about next. But what I can say is that I will write more short stories that relate with each other. Almost as if they are in the same universe. My goal to have all these instances with all these different characters in the same universe that creates a gigantic world and overarching plot. I will for sure continue and complete my VR series since that is one of my first blogs and I am really passionate about the VR tech.

Exam- Part 2

As a blogger I have a weird journey that included many crazy experiences. I have encountered at times publishing a piece and it not appearing or it being posted twice. But it is all a learning experience. But as they say practice makes perfect and I got the hang of most of it by the end of the course. But there were always that one kink that I could never figure out. But all in all I love my blog. It is a place where I can write and post about anything I want. (Pg-13) I can customize and reshape my blog to fit my personality. Besides is there anywhere else that I can say that I am The Tea Bandit? No, I didn’t think so. My blog is a second home for me that I have semi-complete control over. After creative writing is over I will still use my blog. It is a great place to practice and present writing. It is a place you get attached too and want to keep alive. Maybe I could even use it next semester for my English course. There are infinite possibilities for my blog and it can only get better. As for blogs that I will follow will have to meet a certain requirement. Will they continue their blog or not. I will follow all my classmates starting off and after a couple of weeks and let exams pass and see if they post anything. If they do then I will continue to follow them, if they do not then there is no point to follow them. After that I will continue to see who posts and who doesn’t and continue the process. Although there is one exception, if a blog has a piece that really moved me. Then I think it is worth to wait the time for the chance that, that person will make another post with equal or higher content. But there is one that I will follow with no reason at all. It is the hub blog for the Creative Writers 2014-2015. Well there is one simple reason in that it is where throughout the semester that is where we all submitted our best pieces and one unified blog.

Exam- Part A

My writer identity is one of randomness. I see something that interests me and I go off and write about it. I mainly enjoy writing about fantasy. Those grand tales and epic quests and plots that unravel the deeper you descend into the story. The worlds that are not possible in reality. That is what really interests and defines me as a writer. The ability to take anything in your mind and throw it onto a page and share with other people. When I first started out I thought too grandly about my writing. I was too vague, not precise and to the point. Everything I wrote left the reader with more questions resulting in the story not to complete itself. I had a hard time trying to get everything onto the post with the intention to give the reader answers. Is still struggle with this not and improve on it every day. My voice resembles something out of nothing. I take my surroundings and anything I can see and I am able to write about them, most of the time. But my voice is one that takes some time to get used too. At first you may be caught off guard by my writing. As you read more and more you can hear more of my voice and it is unique to everyone that reads my work. That is my goal as a writer. To give everyone that reads my work a unique experience. As for advice I give to you is that write every day. Write about anything or nothing, just write. It doesn’t matter if it sucks or is random dribble it is something. Even if you just take something in your head and sit it onto the page it is something. It is the first step on a long journey to better your writing. You will be baffled at what you can write later on if you take the first steps now. Also just read. I know that is can be boring sometimes or you could of gone on the internet but just read. Give yourself at least 20 minutes a day to sit down and expand your knowledge. That is all it takes. Just 20 minutes a day.

The Black Blade- Short Story #1

What was this light? This spec of light in a sea of darkness; it was blinding. I was drawn to it, it was a beacon. But, a beacon to what, what could it be leading me too. What was there to discover in this darkness. As I walked towards it, it kept getting further away. Then it all went dark… no light, no hope. In an instant everything went dark, and then there was nothing, nothing but the void.
I awoke to the tapping of beak. Who am I? Another peck; I had set aside that question to think about the here and now. Where was I? As I opened my eye lids I was blinded by a light. As my eyes adjusted I climbed to my feet. I started to observe my surroundings and there were: spiraling vines, gigantic roots, and trees as tall as my eyes could see. Questions began popping into my head: Why was I here? Where is this forest? But as tried to think back nothing came, nothing but more questions. I heard a rustle of bushes, I turned half expecting the wind or a small creature, yet what I saw looked human and much too… familiar.
My eye’s finally adjusted to the lighting in the forest yet I still couldn’t make out what the figure was. I started to walk towards, the figure taking a step back every time I took one forward. It wanted me to follow it, or at least that’s the reason my mind gave for my feet to move. I turned a corner and stopped since I was met with a wall and a door. The shadowlike figure stood there facing the door, then stepped forward and vanished. I collected myself and started to investigate the door. I was curious at too what was behind this door and why the shadow led me here. As I searched I felt a pulse coming from my pocket. It was as if a heart was beating over and over again. I reached in and pulled out what was pulsating. As I grasped it I reeled in pain as I threw the key onto the ground. It was a simple key that was made of bronze lined with gold. I picked it up and wondered if it could unlock the door. It still burned but the pain was manageable now. I slid it into the lock of the wooden door and twisted. I heard old tumblers slipping into place, I was eager to see what was behind the door. As I opened the door an old proverb came into my mind ‘curiosity killed the cat’ but I was already overwhelmed but my curiosity. As I peered into the chamber that lay hidden behind the door I saw nothing at first but darkness. Then as light poured into the small chamber and I came face to face with the shadow. It was me.
I stood there dumbfounded at when laid beyond my eyes. The moment overstayed its welcome as the shadow faded away reveling a sword in the vines. I studied the sword that was trapped behind the constricting vines that held it in place. The blade was as black as the night sky and was as sharp as to cut the wind. It radiated a sort of glow luring me in as if it had to tell me something. I couldn’t resist but grasp its handle, and so I did. At that exact instant I felt a pain like no other surging form the blade from my fingertips all the way though my body. It felt like the sun was right in front of me, the pain was beyond human. In an instant everything went dark, and then there was nothing, nothing but the void.
I can hear voices. They sound familiar…
“Eren. Get ready we will be arriving any second now.” This man said to my left.
“Arriving?” I questioned, “Where?”
This time the man on my right spoke. “What are you dreaming at a time like this? This is war Eren, you cannot have any doubts.”
“War? What war?” I said shocked at his response.
“Let him be George. He is just a bit shaken up that’s all. Let him think.” A man sitting across from me spoke.
That was the end of the conversation and I thought to myself quietly. A million questions lined up to be answered yet no answer could be found. We stopped. The gate to the carriage was lowered and it was made clear. It was war. But this was no ordinary war; we were at war with, goblins. As all the soldiers ran past me with their swords strung high yelling I stood there frozen at the sight of the battle raging on.
“What are you doing Eren?” a soldier said shaking my shoulder, “Don’t tell me that you have already lost the will to fight? I thought you wanted revenge on these bastards? I thought you wanted to avenge your family by slaying the goblin who slayed your family, Eren!”
“My family…” I responded amazed at what I was hearing.
“Yes Eren, that goblin is here. He is leading the whole battle Eren, he is the one who killed them,” He said.
I saw him, their commander standing on top of the hill. Suddenly memories began to stream into my mind; they began to project themselves in my mine. I saw him kill them. He killed them. I remembered. Everything was clear. My purpose in this live is to see him die by my blade, by my Black Blade.
I found my resolve; I knew what my purpose was now. There would be nothing that stood in my way, not even death itself. This was no battle, not even a war. This was a showdown, a gamble, an all or nothing last stand. It was time for me to get my revenge. I clutched my sword in my hand and I saw him and there was nothing on the plain anymore. No goblins, no humans, just me and him. I charged slicing though goblin after goblin. I was in taters as I went up but it didn’t matter, it didn’t matter as long as I killed him. From my flank a goblin got me with a slice of his dagger, I felt no pain. I parried his next swing and sliced his throat with the black blade. It was unusual; I was getting stronger and quicker as I progressed as if the blade had given me some of its power. My wounds would not give me any pain, nor would I feel fatigue. The sword had a lust for blood; I a lust for vengeance. Goblin after goblin I slew there ranks, until I reached the summit of the hill. There I came face to face with him. I became consumed by my rage and went in for the final blow.
It was an instant before I found myself stabbed by my own sword. Why? Why did he beat me again?
“WHY!?!” I yelled.
“Because you are afraid”, he said.
He was right. I was afraid. But what was I afraid of? Was it him? No… Was it myself? Or, was it my blade. My accursed Black Blade.
I couldn’t die here. How could I die without finishing what I had started? I need to get up! I need to fight!
“Then use my power”, a voice echoed inside my head.
“Who’s there?” I asked.
“Grab my handle and finish this!” The voice said.
“But, I am not strong enough?” I confessed to the voice.
“Do you wish to give up?”
“Do you wish to destroy him?”
“Then you must surrender yourself to death. Then we shall finish this. Now get up AND FIGHT!”
No fear. No pain. No weakness…
I stood up and I pulled my Black Blade form the pit of my stomach. I watched as blood gushed on the ground but I felt no pain. I took my stance. I readied my sword. I took my weakness and made it strength. I struck. He blocked my first strike. I ducked and countered with a slash at his knees. I quickly followed up with a parry and a strike, severing his left arm. He cried out in pain. I had won. I had fulfilled vengeance. Now I had to deliver the final blow. I raised my sword. He smiled the same smile that he made while he killed them. Enraged I brought down my sword only to be stopped half way through by another. It was his subordinates, his reinforcements. I felt swords stabbed into my back, at least a dozen or so. Had I lost? Was this all my resolve when I had given up everything?
“FIGHT! GET UP AND FIGHT!” The voice called out.
“I MUST FIGHT!” I screamed at the top of my lungs!
I felt power coursing through my veins but this time it was not the swords power but my own. I could not be stopped until I saw him dead. There was nothing which could stop me, not even death. I lunged up and brandished my sword. I sliced the goblins behind me. I turned to the goblin commander who had already taken arms with his only arm.
“Won’t you just die?” He spat at me.
“I will as soon as you do.” I said as I came at him at full speed.
He trusted his sword forward. I dodged out of the way with blinding speed and parried the blade. It came out of his hand and he stood there, dumbfounded. I raised my blade at his throat. With one stride I plunged the blade though his throat and decapitated him.
Instantaneously the pain rushed all throughout my body. My vengeance complete; my life forfeit.
In an instant everything went dark, and then there was nothing, nothing but the void.

My River Visit.

The River is strong when the mountains melt. They fuel the river to go on and flow forever. When the lands flood the river will stay. It will remain in the same spot running its course forever. The river is in perfect harmony to nature. The river adapts to its surroundings; the river grows and shrinks. The River is vast. It flows without a care for what lies around. It has only one direction to carry its energy. The river never stops flowing. It gives life as well as takes it to those not sure how to read its waters.

River Quote Response: Never give up; for even rivers someday wash dams away. –Arthur Golden

Obstacles are a factor of life. Life makes new obstacles for us to face and to concur. The river embodies this and persists and comes at the obstacle head on, never to back down. This is nature’s way to persist and to overcome the obstacles in its path. No matter how big or strong that dam may be you possess the power to erode its rock exterior and make it wither away and keeps the river flowing. Your river is powered by a mighty mountain with endless reservoirs. Let that mountain be your motivation.

River Metaphor: A metaphor of how I relate the River to influences in peoples daily lives.

The River is a pool of thought. It is pure and ever flowing. Yet it shapes to its outside influences, twists and turns affect the rivers direction and flow. The river is affected by these influences but continues on flowing down the set path around the bends and twists. It flows on and on till it reaches a place with no bends or twists. It flows out to the ocean free of the influences of the ridges and valleys.

Emulation Poem Writing #1- The Throne Awaits

An Emulation Piece heavily influenced from an excerpt from J.R.R. Tolkiens “The Return Of The King”

Excerpt from “The Return Of The King”:

To the sea, to the sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling,
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices in the Lost Isle calling,
In Eressea, in Elevenhome that no man can discover,
Where the leaves fall not: land of my people forever!

My Emulation of the Piece:

Need to pee, need to pee! The washroom is calling,
The water is sploshing, and I am falling.
West, west away, the round bowel is waiting,
Oh sh!t, oh Sh!t, down hear me falling,
The visions in my head that have gone before me.
I will run, I will leave the floor that binds me;
For my time is ending and my bladder is failing.
I will pass the wide way waters sploshing.
Long are the strides on the Last step falling, Sweet is the urge of the Throne that is calling,
In the room, on the throne that no man can describe,
Where the urge is quenched: urine drained away forever!

Othello- Significance of Swords

Today I will be talking about how different types of swords held significance in Shakespeare’s, Othello. The director made a bold and creative choice to use different types and styles to flesh out the characters. I will go into detail on how the diverse selection of blades and daggers expressed the internal thoughts and feelings of the characters.

In the start of the play the main character, Othello, possessed a saber-like blade partaking to a German style dussack. This was an unusual choice since at the time period the main types of sword used were: Broadswords, Blackswords, Rapier, and Riding swords. A dussack is a lean sword that has a mid-range attack; it specializes in defensive fighting and has a blunt and sharp side. TO use this blade a great deal of skill and strategy is needed. This suited Othello well since he was remarked as the rest of the characters as one of the strongest commanders. As Iago planted lies in Othello and doubt began to spread the director also reflected that in his sword. As the play progressed Othello switched form a saber to a dagger. The dagger represents what Othello once was to what he is now; it is also a symbol of his whole figure changed form a noble saber to a small concealed dagger. I found this a very effective way to symbolize the decent into madness that Othello was experiencing.

Furthermore, Iago, the main antagonist carried with him a rapier and dagger. This was common technique at the time and Shakespeare rather enjoyed the rapier and dagger combo. The technique was to use the rapier in one hand and the dagger in the other. The dagger was mainly used to block incoming attacks and force your opponent’s weapon away and parry with the rapier. It could also be used for a quick jab if locked with an opponent. This fit Iago’s character well, since Iago is deceptive and cunning and uses others to his advantage so does this type of swordsmanship. Since you use the dagger to block your opponent you require cunning and quick thinking to outsmart and use your enemy’s blade against them. The dagger also is a weak blade; it is used for quick and deadly strikes. You require patience and cunning to win with this type of swordsmanship. This compliments Iago’s way of dealing with other people. He waits and plays them until it is the perfect time to strike. It was a very unique way to express Iago’s characteristic and it was very successful.

Additionally, Cassio had a very unique type of rapier to express his skill and rank. Instead of a light rounded type of rapier Iago possesses, Cassio is given a more heavy type of rapier with a more large edge and blade. It requires more power and skill to use than the normal rapier and dagger technique. The modu operandi is perfect stance and powerful concise strikes. It represents the skill and stature of Cassio and how his skill with the blade reflects his nature, proud and strong.

Thick Blade:

This was a very risky choice by the director to use different swords for different character. Although it had a very unique effect on how I perceived the play and characters. It was a subtly way to flesh out their true characteristics and in some cases their goals.

This is my opinion on how I perceived the roles these swords played in Othello. I may be wrong on some sword types since I was only allowed to see them from a distance and I had to recall on my memory. Thank you for reading.

A Step To Virtual Reality? Part 1- Intro to KickStarter and the Re-Birth of VR

This will be a little mini-series mainly based on two advances of technology called the Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni. Both of these devices are made to simulate a virtual reality for gamers hence the nickname VR. Essentially the goal of these devices are to make the player so immersed in the game that he or she is playing that they have a stimulated state of mind and think that they are a part of that world. But before I go into how these devices function and what major purposes they have I want to take a look into how they got started. TO start with the Virtuix Omni (Omni treadmill) the founder had been working on the project for 2 years before presenting it to a website called Kickstarter. Kickstarter is website where anyone can set up their very own ‘Kickstarter’ where they pitch a idea that they want funded and set up rewards for people who donate a certain amount. This way it shows that people are interested in your project and you receive funding. By the end of the funding time the the Omni had been allotted in kickstarter it has raised ~$3 million thus began its ‘kick start’ to manufacturing. The Oculus Rift in the other hand had a background before getting funded on Kickstarter. It first had its big reveal at 2012 Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) where it created a large fan base that was very interested in the idea of the rebirth of VR. After the success at E3 the Oculus began its Kickstarter campaign and far outreached its goal. After that the Oculus Rift began working on a Developer Pack to ship to some of its backers on kickstarter and game manufactures. The Omni Treadmill was created to also be used in conjunction with the Oculus Rift to simulate almost 100% VR. These projects were such a success mainly because the gaming community was looking for something like this. There were many attempts to simulate VR such as the Wii or PS Move or the Xbox 360 Kinnect. But none of them matched up to the level that the Oculus Rift and Omni Treadmill presented. That is why these inventions could be the Re-Birth of the Virtual Reality Dimension that every Gamer has dreamed about. Thanks for reading Part 1 in A Step To Virtual Reality. I will be writing and uploading Part 2 shortly and it will feature previous attempts at VR and if they were successful or not.
